Duplolas 1 Posted December 30, 2012 I need to solve this problem: Given y=3x^4 - 6x^2 on the interval [-1,2]. Find the intervals of increasing, decreasing, concave up, concave down, min/max values, and x-coordinates of points of inflection. Ive found the extrema points, I just dont know what to label each, same with the increasing and decreasing. Please help if you can.

Salt 1 Posted December 30, 2012 Inflections at: -.5, .5 Max: Infinity or 0 depending on if they are asking for Local Max Min: -3, same if it's local Min Increasing from (-1, 0) Decreasing from (0,1) Increasing from (1, 2] Concave Down (-.5, .5) Concave Up (.5, 2) This is all I remember from Business Calc from over a year ago so yolo. dopescope 0 Posted December 31, 2012 inc from (-1,0) (1,2) dec from (0,1) critical points: x= -1, 0 , 1 infl pts: x= -1/(squareroot of 3),+1/(squareroot of 3 conc up: (-1,-1/squareroot of 3), (+1/squareroot of 3, 2) conc down: (-1/squareroot of 3, 1/squareroot of 3) you find 1st and 2nd deriv. set both equal to zero. the zeros of the 1st deriv will be your critical pts and the zeros of your 2nd deriv will be your infl pts. plug in numbers between the infl and critical pts to see if +/-. if the numbers are positive for between your infl pts, that means its concave up and vice versa. if numbers are positive for between your critical pts, that means its inc and vice versa. hard to explain through text. i took AB calc last year and got an A and a 5 on the AP exam. Duplolas 1 Posted December 31, 2012 Well RpgS and Dope Scope are kinda correct. I guess you answered the Increasing and Decreasing, but neither of you answered which were the maxs / mins aka Absolute Min/max and Local Min/max :/ Oh well its a start thanks alot
