Have you ever heard of FEZ? It's an indie puzzle game that's much better with a controller. Save 75% on FEZ on Steam It's also on an a sale until the 4th so its only 2.49.

The developer of this game is a retard, I wouldn't support it. The only worse developer to support is like, Zoë Quinn or something.

An Asus VG248QE would be a good option assuming 24 inches is big enough for you. The things would stand out are high contrast ratio, led backlight and 1ms response time.

 

Most games should be able to hold 144fps with your gtx 980; but, some more complex ones might fall slightly short.
