Lately, me and the other TF2 higherups have noticed an uproar in people who are not satisfied with the current state of the TF2 division of our community in terms of how we present ourselves and some of the rules that they feel are far too strict. We have discussed many topics and talked with a lot of staff over the past few days for the betterment of not only their staff ability, but for the community and to feel welcomed and respected as they should be in hopes that they will continue to support and play on our servers.
I would like to do a Staff PSA in this post in hopes that everyone will see that we want to make a change to make everyone as satisfied as possible. Of course, there are times where you may not necessarily agree with the rules or such and you may not be superbly happy about the division, but we have to try to make everyone as happy as they can be to a realistic and fair degree.
Many staff members have been talked to individually about one or more of these topics already, but I would like to make it publicly known so that our current staff can find a way to improve to the upmost degree if they feel like they should be working on one of the things mentioned. Even if you feel you don't need to work on anything, please read this and try to improve on them to the upmost degree regardless in hopes that you can be as good of a staff member and role-model for the community as possible. Learning is a great way to climb positions!
Staff members should not try to interpret rules wildly from their original intent.
Recently, some people have felt as if they have been wrongly punished because staff members are being far too broad with the rules and end up punishing people for reasons that stray too far from the actual !motd. I would like to remind staff that it is completely OK to ask questions and talk to a staff member in a higher position (whether that be admin or one of the higherups) whether something is disallowed or not in hopes that this will happen less, and that I would also like to see staff try to enforce rules directly towards what they are related to.
Staff members should try to recognize the situation appropriately and take everything in context.
We have felt as if staff sometimes may not appropriately address the situation because they aren't reading the context whatsoever and jump to conclusions regarding rules such as disrespect but towards their friends and other such examples. I would like to remind staff that it is OK if someone says that it's a joke and you go back on your warning or mute/gag and to understand the situation appropriately before handing out a punishment.
Staff members should be a role-model to other people and act maturely, specifically when handing out punishments.
Just a reminder that staff should recognize that they are a role-model towards the server and many people will look up to you if they care about the community and the servers. We would like to see staff act more maturely overall and specifically when handing out punishments. This is not to say that you can't have fun and be yourself at all, but try to act more responsible and like a role-model to ensure that everyone gets a good impression of the server and so that new members and such will take into account your responsibility and maturity!
If someone disagrees about their punishment, allow them to calmly tell you why they disagree, and supportively direct them to the forums.
I cannot stress enough how important it is that you do not shut someone down and tell them "go make a ban protest lol" if they get in trouble on the servers and they disagree with their punishment. If someone disagrees, talk calmly and respectfully about why they were punished and if things escalate on the servers or if they still disagree, supportively and respectively direct them to the forums and inform them that they should make a ban protest if they feel it is necessary or contact one of the higherups to discuss their punishment. Do not shut people down disrespectfully as it often ensures that they won't come back to the server. Of course, if people continuously argue about the issue, then warn and gag/mute as normal or whatever punishment is appropriate, but always assist them first.
No talking over other people is not only for staff but for other players + regarding when to enforce the rule.
The idea of this rule is so that we don't create extreme chaos with people speaking over each other constantly and so that people don't randomly interrupt people consistently. The rule does not only apply to staff, but also to people on the server. It also does not mean to silence every person who speaks at the same time as you because you are staff. To enforce this rule correctly, pay attention to when they started speaking and if they interrupted someone blatantly rather than if two people accidentally speak around the same time and both don't stop speaking (to a fair and realistic degree).
If someone's mic isn't very good or isn't working, inform them of what isn't working and give advice instead of saying "fix your mic".
Staff should always try to help people if someone on the server's mic has a lot of background noise and assist them in how to fix it rather than just simply stating "fix your mic". For example, if you can hear their in-game audio, tell them to plug in some headphones to prevent the in-game audio from coming through their mic. If they do not comply, then follow the extended mute system up to a day (warn -> mute -> day mute -> hour ban etc).
Staff should always remain unbiased as possible.
In order to prevent unfair punishments and arguments, try to remain as unbiased as possible and put yourself in someone else's shoes before handing out a punishment just in case you feel that you may be being rash. It is impossible to be entirely unbiased and there's no way to prevent that, but try to be as unbiased as possible to a realistic degree to ensure that most people feel that the punishment handed out was just and fair.
Staff members should always be respectful to not only players, but other staff too.
Remember that you are a role-model and that treating others with a lack of respect will not only encourage them to break rules, but also feel unwelcome to the server and community as a whole. Regardless of the situation and whether they are a rule-breaker or not, treat everyone with the same degree of respect. This also heavily applies to staff members. If you don't like a staff member, remember that you are working with them and not against them, and that they are also a member of the community as well and should not be treated any less than such. There has been a lot of drama recently regarding a few staff members and we would like to see no more of that and for everyone to treat each other respectfully.
Try to be less strict regarding the immature voices rule
We are hoping to see staff hold back a bit more regarding the immature voices rule as we feel that staff are jumping to stop people from harmless fun on the mic far too quickly. For example, if someone does an impression of myself having fun on the server, let them but not to a consistent level and as long as people aren't getting annoyed by it. However, do not forget that this is still a rule and is still not allowed, but let people feel a bit more free regarding the rule.

SyrixCoffeeWolf reacted to Tekk in Get rid of spawn protection
Spawn protection reduces the risk of spawn camping (obviously). Spawn camping will usually lead to population going down or people just getting fed up and leaving. Whilst I agree spawn protection can be irritating when they can attack you, but you can't attack them, I feel as though having some sort of resistance to spawn camping is important and without it the server could suffer. I'd say it's the best meet in the middle option for allowing spawn camping and making sure people don't leave as a result of it -1

-1 As annoying as it may be to be killed by someone who effectively has god-mode, imagining some maps without spawn protection just makes me shudder. Clocktown is a fine example of it, where even with it on a lot of spawncamping happens to BLU team in particular and it can be hard to push out of spawn even with it. While I do kinda agree with Ian that easy spawncamping is usually the result of poor map design, on TGH, since a lot of the maps are based off or from another game, they aren't really balanced for another game like TF2 and an easy solution to this would be to just have spawn protection on that way we don't have to end up removing a good percentage of the maps we have.

SyrixCoffeeWolf reacted to LAN_Megalodon in Get rid of spawn protection
spawn protection is pretty stupid considering spawn camping is a product of poor map-design 90% of the time and is still do-able even with protection on.

I agree that it is pretty annoying to kill someone near their spawn and they just quick spawn back and come out to kill you with like five seconds of god mode basically but still I would rather have this way over the alternative where you don't have any all. If we were to remove it and just say no spawn camping that would would be the most time consuming thing to watch for staff and it would be awful for this server, especially considering how the surf server which does have that rule and how it is usually more difficult to get in/to the enemy spawn than here has this problem almost constantly. Also if we were to just remove it and allow spawn camping it would most likely just end up with people leaving considering how bad spawn camps can get at times. So I'd just say -1 for this and to keep the system as is.

You have said on multiple occasions you get off when to much staff is on. You like to go to servers with no staff so you can break rules and start things (as you yourself have stated). Your source bans list on our servers is....colorful.  You say that you have reasons for arguing with staff and that its, when we abuse our power or whatever but really what that translates to, is that you do not like being punished and have a problem with authority (something you have shown on multiple occasions).
So no I do not think you would be a good addition to our community as you have also shown you only care about yourself and those who like/don't punish you and anyone else is wrong and abusive.

But like most of your posts and points about the server you wish to change, it's for your own good and to turn the server into your own playground and make sure the rules are what you want them to be. You do not care about the community, or what the effect of these changes would be so long as it benefits you. You even tend to go and blackmail, and scrounge for "evidence" to get people you do not like demoted. If you were to be helpful, accepting and open to our community this would be a different thread but so far all I have seen is hostility

Twitter's pretty lax in terms of rules, the people on it might not be in terms of what they themselves think is acceptable.
People also not wanting to be around certain language is not equivalent to them being hyper sensitive or whatever you're implying. We've seemingly collectively decided that we'd rather have our servers be an environment without the use of racial slurs. Does that make us hyper-sensitive?
The slippery slope is a fallacy, one type of word being banned does not inherently mean all other less offensive words follow, but as I've pointed out, if we ban racial slurs because they're slurs and in general we think they will not have a positive impact, it's not odd for people to think that it's inconsistent that we allow all the other ones. I do not think our servers are strict at all comparative to other ones. If you look up the rules for skial or jump academy, or any other large group, they tend to be relatively close to ours. Our servers aren't lawless dumps, I like that. I feel it elevates the discussion and enjoyment for most everyone involved. People trying to purposely antagonize people by toeing the line has always annoyed me and the less damage they can do by trying that, the better.

The thing is most of these have developed new meanings and are not taken as insults by anyone. A few of these words are currently banned and a few more of them I can agree on banning. This list is not all things that are offensive but could be in some context. I would support banning autistic as an insult or midget, or Vegetable (window licker though hmm). These are words that hurt people, and really a general "No slurs, no derogatory slang" rule would work great. But I feel coming down and nitpicking that  "oh  my great aunts best friends sister found this offensive" does not help the case as the words we are discussing her do have a strong negative presence in today's society and I think we should have a tighter rein on them
  17. Agree
SyrixCoffeeWolf reacted to LAN_Megalodon in Censoring, Hypocrisy and Toxicity
My stance usually would be that we shouldn't even need a list of banned words and like nearly every other platform, rather should try to figure out on a case by case basis whether something constitutes as harassment or not.
With that said, I think multiple users, multiple times, have demonstrated that they get some kind of enjoyment out of doing literally anything just to get under other users' skin, and will play anything they've done in bad faith off as a "joke" when confronted about it. It also doesn't really help our community or servers to have someone shouting the n word over and over again because it amuses their Cro Magnon brain (and we do have those users), I don't think that would make our servers feel very inviting or cast the rest of our community in a very intelligent light.
So idk. It seems like the easiest work around would be to just have a ban on racial slurs, if anything, and then evaluate anything else on a case-by-case basis. But everyone thought rules were too loose and moderators too subjective and wanted everything to be iron clad, so yall really fůcked yourselves here, there's not really a case that can be made anymore that's logically coherent you goddamn fools.

You're saying "you guys" as if I personally care about the word and we are actively actually going to do anything about this. Saying that "you just need to grow thicker skin" is incredibly ignorant and doesn't consider the mental state of the person. Internet or not, words can hurt people and just because they don't hurt you or me doesn't make it OK to say it to someone else. As I have literally said in this thread, I don't think we should ban the word faggot, but obviously if someone is being disrespectful towards you then that's a problem. Consider how OTHER people feel and not what YOU feel. I don't care about the word myself as I've said. I'm a fucking faggot and I've said it a few times on discord too because it's funny to say.

OK, you need to chill out. "Faggot" is still a slur and still offends many gay people today, not to mention that being gay and also the whole bullying aspect for it is a VERY high cause of suicide and depression/anxiety. People have every right to get upset and offended by it. That doesn't mean that it shouldn't be allowed on servers.

Can we just keep the basis that if someone is harassing someone, we punish them? Can we also keep in mind that the people are behind a monitor acting all tough; Literally ignore them. Punish them if they're harassing someone/you. How hard is that?

xG can be a welcoming place without being a Hitler with slurs. Obviously racial slurs are no good, but come on.

We're not saying "ban every word that's considered a slur". We should ban the words that are commonly used to demean people so everyone feels welcomed. There's a nice hand full of people on our servers who don't like this word being used wether it's "jokingly" or not. Everytime someone's like to say "oh you fucking faggot" or "what are you a faggot?" makes someone feel that their in the wrong because of their sexuality. Our clan/servers are suppose to make people feel welcomed, their suppose to have fun. They shouldn't have to worry that they'll be ridiculed or not.
Maybe we should go through that list and ban a good amount of slurs. No one should be making fun of people for the way they choose to live their life.
Like Queen said, there's been many of times we've muted/gaged people for saying the N word, then someone asks why another person wasn't gagged for "faggot". We have to come around full circle or we just look silly. Also, we have alot of actual children who play on our servers. Wether the games we play are rated M or not, we have to keep that in mind. You get a 12 year old running around calling people faggots and not know any better? That's just not right lol

What you look like most certainly does factor into you being a hacker or not since actual hackers will 90% of the time have no cosmetics or F2P cosmetics. There was no way to tell that it was Jo, and I'm sure we all know that Jo is pretty decent at sniper, so though I agree people shouldn't jump to conclusions because of their cosmetics, it is certainly a factor often.
