  1. I think you completely missed my point.

No worries, though, it's totally my fault (y).

So, I'll try to be a little more clear and direct this time.

The point I meant to make is that xG isn't a holy grail which will serve as the main attraction of your resumé if you're part of the 90% of xG's population (I know, it should be obvious but I had shit in my head yesterday).

That 90% being those who are not staff, haven't particularly contributed to the community other than posting on the forums, which everyone who read that statement of Forest's does anyway.

To be as frank as possible, my purpose for writing was to inform the reader that as great a community as xG is, it won't solve all your real-life problems (I know, it should be obvious but I had shit in my head yesterday).

I imposed clarification on Forest's post in which he stated how his experiences on xG had helped him with a real-life application.

However, what's critical to understand is that Forest has the experiences and prestige of the top 10% of xG's population, and those experiences of managing a community fit quite nicely on an application, while most of us have little to gain out of xG in terms of applying for a job.

In short, which looks better on a resumé?

"I'm part of a gaming community, I post on the forums"

"I helped manage, run, code, and design a large gaming community"

Hopefully that makes a little more sense. :emoji_ok_hand:

Yeah definitely, but that apparent 10% is something anyone can get to if they put the effort forward :) So that's why I say if you do that and go above and beyond the normal member I think it's worth putting on there.

  2. I mean it is something you can put on a resume. You're managing users on a large website and servers by enforcing rules and checking applications on a selective basis. All the coding I've done for the website also is something I put on my resume (it's why I have a job now lol)

At the end of the day if you put effort into something that's above and beyond it's worth putting on a resume.

  3. [ Suggestion ] New Forum Ratings

Instead of proposing a new rating, maybe consider having a rating or two that already exist be swapped out? To name a couple, "Cena'd" and "Shrek'd" are pretty tasteless [and outdated] in my opinion :coffee:

That being said, I'm not sure if this would dissolve all of the previous ratings (for the swapped out ratings) on someone's Profile, or if they would simply just be re-labelled.

EDIT: As for emoji, it would be cool to have a 'Custom' set (much like Default, Extended, etc) that only include "donated-for" emoji. Obviously there would have to be rules set in place (IE. content of the emoji), but I think it would be a pretty neat feature to allow for individuality. Additionally, if possible, this set could only be accessed by those who have donated for "Premium" emoji. Just a thought on top of what was previously suggested in this thread.

@Rhododendron for thoughts on this thread.

    Forum Updates - Suggestions

  4. Is there any way to customize a Member's post-background? Lately been thinking of a "premium" feature to be donated for that includes exclusive content/features/perks; perhaps one that times out after a certain period of time?

    To elaborate further on this:

1-Day/Trial Period - User is given 24 hours upon donation of a set-number ($1 or even free trial period, one time use per forum account) that enables access to premium Membership perks

1 Month Period - User is given 30 days upon donation of a set-dollar amount

1 Year Period - User is given 365 days upon donation of a set-dollar amount

Premium features are TBA, though it should be discussed in detail before enacting any sort of feature ahead-of-time. Generate the hype, so to speak.

That being said, this all heavily relies on whether or not it is even possible pending @Rhododendron 's response

So basically, from what I can think of, these would be the areas affected:

    • Upon donation, user would receive permissions/access to otherwise "locked" features of the forums (for a pending period of time)
      • This can include [but is not limited to]
        • Custom emoji set(?)
        • Customizable background of post(?)
        • Custom ratings(?)
        • ???

Obviously this is by no-means a final product; this is merely the conceptual stage. With a feature like this, it will promote exclusivity which in and of itself is already desirable (hence popularity in Servers with exclusive hats/trails/etc).

Additionally, this may also rake in more donations; and theoretically, the credits system could even be utilized instead of donations which can potentially bolster activity in Members of the community seeing as how they would have something to work for via posting, etc. This would give Members the option of donating for credits to purchase premium Membership, or to simply deliver incentive by working for it to accumulate credits through regular use of the forums.

Though to re-iterate, this hinges on whether such a feature is even possible.

With emoji's (or smilies as they are called on the forum) they are just there for quick access and nothing really prevents people from just attaching an image to a post.

With custom ratings I would have to code up some custom code so if we get an influx of custom ratings then a user's profile won't show a giant list of ratings since that could cause issues.

I rather not let people set backgrounds of their post (will definitely cause readability issues) but I could enable covers and backgrounds for profiles and it displays on their member card wherever they want. I'll get that working in the next few weeks and let everyone set the color of their profile background and cover and you can purchase the ability to set an image as your cover and background.

  5. It CAN be double spaced? That's weak sauce. If you really care you can get that word count up. Nobody's gonna be editing so the space is just a crutch. Like the phlog.

  6. On startup, the program would get the highscore from the saved file on the FTP, then set a variable (high_score) to that in the program. If the users score, (new_score) is higher than high_score, it will update the file on the FTP to the value of new_score.

I thought about something like that, but had 0 idea how to execute that as I've never worked with that kind of stuff, but I have worked with FTP's before and figured this would be a viable option. I'll look into this, but I don't think I have the knowledge to actually execute it properly.

Also not to worried about the security of the game, as much as I am just allowing multiple users to compete against one universal score.

Honestly a database would be better for this as you will have to download the entire file each time to make edits, load it into memory, make the edit, save it, and reupload the entire thing everytime.

  7. This is an important new feature to Xeno Gamers.

Long have animated GIFs been causing eye strain and simply do not fit within the needs of our time.

    Today.
