How to build a kickass economy rig (less than $500)

Recommended Posts

Apart from cannibalizing an old pc and upgrading parts

this is quite possibly one of the best builds if you're in economy mode and want to play games like

Arma3, BF3, Crysis 3, etc

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor

Motherboard: ASRock 960GM/U3S3 FX Micro ATX AM3+ Motherboard

Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866 Memory

Storage: Seagate Barracuda 500GB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive

Video Card: HIS Radeon HD 7870 2GB Video Card

Case: Apex Vortex 3620 ATX Mid Tower Case

Power Supply: XFX 550W 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply

Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224BB DVD/CD Writer

Ladies and mental kids, YOU ARE WELCOME :D

So I dont know how you could possibly get this to <$500, unless you slowly bought the parts as they were on sale.

Here is the price, as well as where all the parts can be bought: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black, HIS Radeon HD 7870 GHz Edition, Apex Vortex 3620 - System Build - PCPartPicker

As far as I know, windows 7 or 8 should be perfectly fine. To be honest, I would go with Windows 8, thats what I chose and I'm glad I did. (Will set you back around $95)

It certainly will be a pretty good PC and the only issue I have with it is the processor, you can put in an extra 50 bucks and get something much better.

Using 1920 x 1080 that graphics card benchmarks around 72 FPS on average using very high settings and high AA on Arma 2. I would expect to see it around 50 fps at least.

Ram is okay, I'd say if you have extra money go ahead and add a little more, but 6 really isnt anything to complain about. The processor is so-so, not something that HAS to be changed. It is a little older but is pretty good in general.

Graphics card: Thats your problem. Benchmarks are showing around 10 fps on far cry 2. This is your bottleneck. Ill recommend some when I have some time later today.

I use 8 core 8350. Overclocked to 4.8Ghz. using 7950 oc'd to 1100/1550. running 30 fps on most servers.

I'm pretty sure you're having some problems with your settings or something; because, I'm getting 40-50 on max settings and i only have an i5 quad and an overclocked HD7770
